Background

Novogrodovska Coal Mine is an underground coal mine in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. In 2012, private company Novogrodovska Mine 1-3 LLC received the right to use the coal seams for 20 years from the state enterprise Selydivvugillia.[3] Due to non-fulfilment of the conditions of the issued special permit, in May 2018, the State Geological Survey issued Order No. 160 on the suspension of the special permit. After that, the private company Novogrodovska Mine 1-3 LLC filed a lawsuit in court to cancel the order. After several trials, the company managed to restore the permit.[4]

As of 2022 (and possibly earlier), it appeared that both the state-owned Selydivvugillia and the private Novogrodovska Mine 1-3 LLC extracted coal at the mine, with the private production being much higher.[3][5]

The private company changed owners several times, as of 2022 it appeared to be owned by private individuals Mykola Dunayev, the chairman of the board of Donbasenergo PJSC Eduard Bondarenko and people's deputy Kostyantyn Efimov from the group "Dovira".[3]

In December 2023, the state-owned mine reported that it celebrated its 70th anniversary. Many miners are now defending Ukraine, all those who remained work in difficult conditions, overcome blackouts, stay several shifts underground due to a lack of labour.[6] It therefore appeared that the mine was operating.

In August 2024, it was reported that the state-owned mine owned by Selydivvugillia is stopping operations due to the approaching war line. The mine was being flooded and gassed.[7]
