Background

Nueva Rosita Coal Mine (also known as IMMSA Operation) is a mothballed coal mine with a stated capacity of 350,000 tonnes per annum in the state of Coahuila, Mexico. The Nueva Rosita mine is an open pit coal mine with an estimated capacity of 350,000 tpa (tonnes per annum). The Nueva Rosita mine was originally associated with a larger project owned by Grupo México that also included the underground Olivo coal mine and the Nueva Rosita coal washing plant. The Olivo mine was closed in 2006, and the coal washing plant was shut down in 2017.

Coal production at the Nueva Rosita mine, which had reached 150,000 tonnes in 2014, declined steadily in subsequent years. In 2020, the mine reportedly produced only 36,000 tonnes of coal, though it still ranked fourth among Mexican coal mines. In 2021 it was no longer listed among Mexico's top five coal producers, and Mining Data Online reported that all mining activities at Nueva Rosita had been suspended.
