Background
The Nuurstei coking coal project is a proposed open cut coking coal project owned and operated by the small Australian firm, Aspire Mining,in Khuvsgul, Mongolia.[1] According to project sponsor Aspire Mining, the mine is currently being evaluated as a near term development, producing a washed hard coking coal. In 2018, a drilling program reexamined the modest resource base. As of October 2020, the company has continued to promote the project.[2]
The proposed site is 160 km east of Aspire's Ovoot coking coal project.[1]
Although there have been few public updates on this project in recent years, the project does appear in Aspire Mining's 2021 Annual Report, and therefore appears to still be proposed. However, the company admits, "No substantive work was conducted on this project during the year."[3] The project is presumed shelved, until further announcements.
