Background

Obukhovskaya coal mine (Шахтоуправление Обуховская) is an operating underground coal mine located near Zverevo, Krasnosulinsky district, Rostov Oblast, Russia. Obukhovskaya coal mine is owned and operated by Shakhtoupravlenie Obukhovskaya JSC. The company was previously owned by the Ukrainian DTEK but was sold to Valleyton Investments Ltd in 2022.[10] Later in June 2023 it was announced that the new owner of the company is a company from Moscow SBK Premier.[11][12]

The financial situation of DTEK deteriorated, leading to Sberbank taking over as the main creditor of the company and subsequently selling the mine to Valleyton Investments.[10][13] The Russian authorities ordered to stop the supply of Russian anthracite coal to Ukraine in 2021, citing that domestic needs for the higher-grade coal need to be prioritized.[14]

In 2018 an incident occurred at the mine leading to one fatality.[15]

In February 2022 a collapse of the mine left 3 workers trapped.[16] It appears that they were rescued.

In the first half of 2022, the mine produced 0.796 million tonnes,[17] with full-year production reaching 1.5 million tonnes.[11] In Q1 2023, production increased by 35% with the annual plan to reach 1.8 Mt in 2023.[18]

In March 2023, one miner died and two received injuries when following a collapse.[19]
