Background
The Omsukchansky Coal Mine (Омсукчанский разрез) is a proposed surface coal mine located near Omsukchan, in the Magadan Oblast, Russia. In 2013, East Mining Company was established to develop coal mining production in the Far East of Russia, including the Omsukchan Coal Cluster.[3]
Notably, coal mining development has been stymied in this area because it lacks reliable transport infrastructure between the Omsukchan deposits and the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. The Omsukchan coal cluster project intended to reconstruct a road section of Omsukchan-Galimy, construct the Galimy-Pestraya-Dresva highway, and construct a coal terminal on the coast of the Pestraya Dresva bay.[4]
According to the website of North-Eastern Coal Company, it has 3 licenses to explore coal deposits in Omsukchansky basin.[5]
The mine project was mentioned in Russia's 'Programme for Coal Industry Development up to 2035', published in June 2020.[6] However, as of October 2022 and as of October 2023, there have been no updates or mention of the project in the public domain so it appeared to be shelved.
