Background

In 2018, Tohoku announced that they would decommission rather than upgrade Unit 1 of the Onagawa nuclear plant.[6] Units 2 and 3 have been shut down since the Fukushima disaster in 2011. Tohoku plans to restart Unit 2 by September 2024, but the process has been facing delays on account of additional safety construction works. Restarting operations would mark the first nuclear plant to reopen in the eastern region since 2011.[7]
