Background
The pipeline is a main gas transportation pipeline from Russia to Ukraine's southern corridor. It enters through the Sokhranovka gas metering station in Russia.[9] The pipeline runs parallel to the Soyuz Gas Pipeline pipeline.[10] As of July, 2022, the end location of the pipeline, Novopskov, is considered occupied by Russia and part of the Lugansk People's Republic.[11] It is assumed that Ukrainian companies no longer participate in operating or owning this pipeline.
In 2023, the pipeline has undergone maintenance to increase its efficiency. According to pipeline operator Gazprom Transgaz Yekaterinburg, the pipeline is currently used to supply gas to the Orenburg Oblast, consumers in southwestern regions of Russia and Kazakhstan.[8]
Implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Ukraine refused to directly purchase gas from Russia in 2014 and bought reverse gas from the EU: it bought Russian gas from the Europeans from a transit pipe (from the Russian Federation to the EU through Ukraine), or gas that went in the opposite direction to Ukraine after being delivered to the EU via other routes.[12]
Gazprom announced the dismantling of gas pipelines to Ukraine in 2016. The Russian holding planned to eliminate 4.3 thousand kilometers of pipelines and decommission 62 compressor stations by 2020, 10.7 thousand kilometers of pipelines by 2030.[13]
As of September 2023, Gazprom supplies gas for Europe through Ukraine in the volume of 41.5 million cubic meters per day via the Sudzha gas metering station in Russia’s Kursk Region. The request for transit through the Sokhranovka gas metering station had been rejected by Ukraine.[14]
