Background

The energy crisis brought by Russia's invasion of Ukraine led the Hungarian government to decide on an energy emergency package in 2022, which included boosting coal mining and lignite extraction. In addition, a brown coal programme was launched. November 2022, Minister of Economic Development Márton Nagy transferred two coal mining companies – one of which was Ormosszén - to the Ministry of Interior.[3]

The Ormosszén coal mine was said to play an important role in increasing coal mining capacity. The government has increased production to 500,000 tons per year in order to meet the increased needs.[4]

It was not clear how much the mine actually produced in 2023. A media source from June 2023 stated that up to 60 thousand tonnes of coal may be extracted and transported from the mine by surface mining, which means 240 tonnes of coal per day.[5] Local residents complained about noise and dust.[5]
