Background

PécsVasas Coal Mine is a coal mine in Southern Transdanubia County, Hungary.[4]The open-pit mining began in 1962 and continued until 2004.[5] In 2014, the open-pit mining was restarted in a very small area with the plan to produce 15,000 tonnes of coal per year.[6]

In 2018, Eurcoal's report showed 'lignite' production of 0.002 Mt.[7] (2,000 tonnes). Although this mine was listed as 'Hard coal' (Bituminous), the report clarified that this coal is officially classified as lignite due to its low calorific value.

As per 2022 Euracoal report, PANNON HŐERŐMŰ ZRT owned by VEOLIA has extracted very small quantities of coal from the Pécs-Vasas surface mine in Southern Transdanubia, however reported lignite production was shown as '0'.[8] A scientific publication dated June 2023 referred to the mine as abandoned.[9]
