Background

The Paardekop coal project is a proposed underground coal mine, owned by Glencore, near the village of Perdekop, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

Due to an ongoing dispute between Glencore and South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the project hasn't progressed for at least 2 years, and as such, is considered shelved. Although it is unclear the year that the Paardekop coal project was first proposed, Xstrata (now Glencore) cites the project in its annual reserve reports as far back as 2012.[3]

In its 2019 report, Glencore announced that the project was granted a new order mining right in 2017 for 30 years, which will expire on 19 August 2047. They add that "this right has not been executed due to an on-going dispute with [the] Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Approval of environmental licensing and permitting is awaited."[4] The same appears in Glencore's 2021 Resources and Reserves report, and suggests that while the is still planned, it appears to be shelved for the time being.[5]
