Background

Panzhihua Iron & Steel commissioned a 3 x 100 MW coal plant at Geliping from 1993 to 1996. Construction started in January 1991. The two 100MW units of Phase I were completed in June 1993 and were formally completed and handed over in December 2005. The third 100MW unit of the Phase I was completed and handed over in April 1996. Due to obsolete equipment, high energy consumption, and insufficient power generation, the three original units were retired in 2015.[1] The company added a new 300 MW subcritical coal plant at the site in 2016.[2]

Construction for this replacement plant began in August 2013 and supplies energy to its sponsor, the Panzhihua Iron and Steel Company.[1] The total investment for this new facility was 31.5 million RMB, including an environmental protection investment of 319,000 RMB. Its environmental impact assessment report was approved by the Ministry of Environmental Protection in 2011.[3] According to another report sent to the relevant environmental protection agency, denitrification and desulfurization equipment would be added shortly after construction.[3] The new facility will use nearly 400,000 tons of waste coal every year, with an annual power generation capacity of 1.35 billion kWh.[4]

In 2017 the coal plant started a soil and water conservation greening plan for the facility.[5]
