Background

The Patnow Power Station was built in two phases. Patnow I consists of six 200 MW units, units 3-8, which were built in 1967. Units 1-2 were demolished in 2001. In 2008 a new 474 MW supercritical unit known as Patnow II was added. The power station burns lignite coal delivered from nearby mines.[2][3]

One of the 200 MW units is being converted to biomass.[4]

On June 20, 2020, two 200 MW units (Units 3 and 6) at Patnow were closed down.[5] This is believed to be due to tightening European Union emissions regulations.

In October 2020, plant owner Zespół Elektrowni Pątnów Adamów Konin SA (ZE PAK) said it will shut all of its Polish lignite plants by 2030. The remaining units of Patnow 1 coal plant will close by 2024, and Patnow 2 coal plant will close by 2030.[6]

In December 2023, ZE PAK stated that Unit II-1 would be modernized and operated through as late as 2028.[7]
