Background
The plant was commissioned in May 2013 and uses a Refinery Solid Fuel Fired Boiler (RSFFB) to burn coal. The plant was originally composed of four 35 MW Units (4 x 35 MW).
A 44-MW capacity expansion (2 Units x 22 MW) of the plant was being implemented as of 2022, at a cost of P3.3 billion[1], and was scheduled for completion in March 2023.[2] A previous news report indicated that construction on the 44 MW expansion had already begun in 2019. [3]
In the December 2022 DOE's list of existing grid-connected power projects, the 44.4 MW expansion was listed as a newly operating embedded coal-fired unit along with the preexisting capacity at the Petron power station.[4] The two 22.2 MW units had reportedly received Provisional Authorities to Operate (PAO) in December 2022.[4]
Ownership
In September 2013, the plant was apparently purchased from Petron Corporation by the SMC Global Power subsidiary, SPI. [5] Both Petron Corporation and SMC Global Power are part of San Miguel Corporation.
In 2016, the plant was sold back to Petron Corporation via the SMC subsidiary SPI. [5] As of 2022, an SMC Global Power Holdings Corp report indicated that the power plant was still owned by Petron Corporation.[5]
In 2019, a news source reported that Petron Corporation was considering selling the power plant back again to SMC Global Power Holding Corp, [6] though later reports indicated that the station was still owned by Petron.
