Background
Phalanndwa Coal Mine is a surface mine in Delmas, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[6] Canyon Coal owns and operates the Phalanndwa mine, which is located approximately 10 kilometers east of Delmas. The mine employs approximately 310 employees, two thirds of whom are contractors.[7] Coal from the mine is consumed both domestically and by export markets. The mine first started producing coal in 2013.
The life of the mine has been extended considerably from what was originally planned, following an extension project which was completed in 2019. Mining is now expected to continue at the site until 2027.[8] [9]
