Background

Poljana Coal Mine is a proposed UNDERGROUND mine near Pozarevac, Serbia. The Poljana Coal Mine project is developed by Resavica, which is a Public Company for Underground Coal Mining established as per the government's decision in 2003.[2]

The deposit is located south of about 4 km from the town of Pozarevac and belongs to the Kostolac coal basin. It is located near important railway and road roads and potential consumers (Kostolac and Morava power plants).[3] Estimated investments are EUR 45 million.[3]

In 2017, Resavica submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection a request for a decision on the need to prepare a study on the environmental impact assessment.[4] The outcome is unknown.

There have been no news on the project since 2017, however the potential project was still mentioned in the research articles in 2021 and 2022.[3] UNECE's presentation from December 2022 stated Resavica's objective "to begin intensive construction work on the Poljana mine".[5] A Space plan by the Ministry of Construction, Transportation and Infrastructure published in August 2023 stated that the deposit Poljana is not a priority for exploitation.[6]

In July 2024, Serbia released a draft Energy Sector Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia up to 2040 with projections up to 2050.[7][8] Although the strategy referred to other potential new coal mine developments, it did not mention Poljana coal mine.[7] The project was therefore revised to Shelved, as of October 2024.
