Background

Polysaevskaya Coal Mine (шахта Полысаевская) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[3] The Polysaevskaya coal mine is owned and operated by SUEK-Kuzbass JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).

As of 2019, the mine produced about 2.3 Mt of coal, about 1.5 million tonnes of which was exported (steam coal).[4] Polysaevskaya mine has its own washing plant with annual capacity of 2 MT per annum.[4]

SUEK has been taking steps to mothball the mine since 2020 and was in the final stage, as of February 2022.[5] The mine had been operational for more than 80 years, there are still some reserves left but mining them would require substantial investments.[5] It was anticipated that the mine will be mothballed by 'dry method' to leave the possibility of reopening the mine quickly in case needed.[5]
