Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) operates the world's largest coal export facilities in Newcastle, Australia.

PWCS operates two export coal terminals in the port of Newcastle -- the Carrington Coal Terminal and the nearby Kooragang Coal Terminal. The Carrington Coal Terminal has a shiploading capacity of 25 million tonnes per annum while the Kooragang Coal Terminal has a shiploading capacity of 88 million tonnes per annum. The terminals export coal from the Hunter Valley to the northwest of Newcastle. PWCS was formed in 1976 when it acquired the Carrington Coal Terminal. In 1990 it acquired the Kooragang Coal Terminal.

Ownership

PWCS states that it is an "an incorporated joint venture between a number of coal producers and other participants in the Hunter Valley coal industry, including exporters and importers."

A 2008 presentation states that an PWCS is am "unlisted public company owned by the Hunter Valley Coal Industry (70%) and Japanese Coal Customers (30%)". It identified the "Port Waratah Coal Services Effective Ownership" as comprising Coal & Allied 30%, Importers 29.6%, Bloomfield Collieries 3.5% and "Newcastle Coal Shippers" at 35%. Of the the Newcastle Coal Shippers share, Xstrata held 37.1%, Coal & Allied 22.7%, PWCS 9%, Anglo Coal 20%, BHP Billiton 1.7%, Bloomfield Collieries 2.8% with other minor shareholders having the remaining 6.7%.
