Background
In 2016, coal was the main commodity being handled at the Port of Tanjung Intan Cilacap. In the first nine months of 2016, the port handled approximately 1.4 million tonnes of coal.[1] In 2018, the port's manager, Indonesian state-owned enterprise Pelindo III, completed an extension of the docking facilities at the Port of Tanjung Intan Cilacap. After the extension, three ships of up to 180 meters in length can dock simultaneously.[2] In October 2021, Pelindo III, along with three other Indonesian state-owned port management companies, were combined into a single entity, known PT Pelindo II or Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC). This new entity will take over management of the Port of Tanjung Intan Cilacap.[3]
In June 2021, reports emerged of widespread extortion and graft at the Port of Tanjung Intan Cilacap, with port operators charging shipping personnel extra for preferential treatment. One observer estimated that up to IDR 7 billion (US$490,000) of fees were being extorted each month.[4]
