Background
The Boca Chica power station was originally proposed as a floating power plant to be installed on a barge near Boca Chica, Santo Domingo province, Dominican Republic.[8] The plant was subject to significant opposition in the community of Boca Chica[9], prompting plant owner Karpowership Dominican Republic SAS to relocate the project to Azua, where the two barges Irem Sultan and Esra Sultan were installed.[10] Citizens concerned about the plant's impact on mangroves, fish, and other elements of the natural environment have continued to protest development of the plant in Azua.[10][11][12]
