Background
In November 2022, Net Power announced plans to build the world's first utility-scale gas power plant with carbon capture, which would generate electricity with close to zero emissions. Construction on the project was to start during Q3 2024 near Odessa, Texas. Net Power expected the facility to be online in 2026. The announcement came about a year after Net Power had demonstrated its carbon capture technology in a 50-MW demonstration project (NET Power La Porte power station), delivering emissions-free electricity to the grid. The company says its technology captures close to 100 percent of its carbon dioxide emissions — and does not release other pollution, like nitrogen oxides — by combusting gas with pure oxygen and using "supercritical" CO2 as a working fluid to drive a turbine and generate electricity.[9]
In November 2023, Net Power President Brian Allen told investors that the commissioning date had slipped to “sometime between the second half of 2027 and first half of 2028” attributing the delay to global energy supply chain challenges, which had caused extensive lead times across critical components. The company previously had adjusted the cost of the project to approximately USD 1 billion, up from an initial price tag of between USD 750 and USD 950 million.[10] In March 2024, it was reported that the company was aiming to complete FEED in 2024.[11]
