Background

The Prosilio Coal Mine is an underground and surface mine in Kozani, Western Macedonia, Greece. The mine is owned by Mining-Technical-Trade S.A. (METE).

In a presentation dated July 2022, the company stated that after 2012, annual production of the mine ranged between 350 and 430 thousand tonnes. With the existing organisation of mining operations and existing resources, production can rise up to 600 thousand tonnes.[8]

As of early 2024, it was reported that production from METE's lignite mine in Prosilio Servia has recently found a way into the North Macedonian market, as the demand for lignite in the neighbouring country is high. The mine used to supply coal to Florina (Meliti) Power Station but deliveries were interrupted in at November (2023), due to the inability of PPC to absorb it.[9]

In 2023, lignite production in Greece fell 28.9% to 9.7 million tonnes, of which Public Power Corporation (PPC) produced 9.5 million tonnes. Therefore the amounts contributed by Prosilio coal mine and other smaller mines appeared to negligible.[10]

Coal Phase-Out

In 2019, the Greek government aspired to phase out coal by 2023. Following lengthy debates, speculations and the pressure from the energy crisis, the official target date landed at 2028. According to state-controlled PPC’s recent reply within a parliamentary debate, the country will cease burning the solid fossil fuel in 2026.[11] Without a specific statement or information for Prosilio mine, no closing year was assumed, as per information available as of January 2025.
