Background

The Puente Alto Energy power project was proposed by Puente Alto Energy in 2022 to sell power the industrial sector in northern Honduras.[2][3] According to EMCO, the owner of Puente Alto Energy, the power station would burn coal and pet coke to generate 100 MW of power in its initial phase.[4] Investment is estimated at USD 164 million.[4]

Opposition

In early 2024, residents of Puerto Cortés held demonstrations in protest of the proposed coal plant.[5][6]
