Background

The pipeline was part of an infrastructure adaptation project in 2020 in the areas of Mitare and Tiguadare.

Repeated leaks from the pipeline near the Punta Cardón refinery have contaminated offshore waters in the Gulf of Venezuela and Lake Maracaibo.
