Background
The Quintette coal mine is a surface steelmaking coal mine located near Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia, Canada. Previously owned by Teck Resources Limited, it was sold to Conuma Resources in 2023.[6]
Operations at the mine ceased in 2000 as a result of the decline in coal prices at that time.[7] New owners, Conuma Resources, plan to restart mining at Quintette in Q4 of 2023. Quintette Mine, which has operated since 1982, was put on care and maintenance in 2000 due to low coal prices at that time. In 2012, then-owner Teck Coal completed a feasibility study to re-open the mine. The following year, Teck received a Mines Act Permit Amendment and, in 2014, received all other required permits in order to restart the mine. However, they deferred the restart of the Quintette project due to unfavourable market conditions.
Despite the project being fully permitted and deemed able to proceed once a sustained improvement in demand for steelmaking coal occurred, in 2017, Teck communications officer Chris Stannell stated, “We have no near-term plans to reopen Quintette.”[8][9]
In February 2023, British Columbia-based steelmaking coal producer and newcomer Conuma Resources purchased Quintette Mine from Teck Resources for $120 million.[10][11] Conuma plans to restart the mine, with a tentative commencement date of the fourth quarter of 2023.[10]
