Background on Mine

The Rajgamar coal mine is a network of coal mines consisting of Rajgamar Underground mine, Rajgamar Dipside (Deavnara) mine and Rajgamar Dipside (South of PhulakdihNala). Rajgamar underground mine, currently operational, is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, producing 0.45 million tonnes per annum, on a mining lease area of 3486.577 hectares in Korba, State Chhattisgarh, India. The project was earlier granted environmental clearance by the Ministry on 16 May, 2006, and now requires fresh appraisal/approval due to lapse of some of the statutory clearances necessary for operating the mine. Public Hearing for the project was conducted on 29th November, 2004 by the State Pollution Control Board. The project area involves 1994.121 ha of forest land. Stage-II approval under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980 for diversion of forest land for non-forestry use has been obtained for 243.917 ha of forest land while Stage-I FC is available for another 921.14 ha of forest land. No proposal seeking Stage-I forest clearance for the diversion of balance forest land of 916.993 ha has been submitted by the Project Proponent.[2] However, the mine has been in operation since 1975 and remains in operation even now.[3]

Rajgamar Dipside (Deavnara) underground Coal Mine of production Capacity 0.6 MTPA in the mining Lease Area of 730 ha at Villages, Rajgamar, Tewanara and Godma, Tehsil Korba, Dist. Korba, Chhattisgarh was allotted to M/s Deavnara Coalfields Pvt.Ltd. a joint venture company of API Ispat &Power tech Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi and C. G. Sponge Manufacturers Consortium Coalfield Pvt. Ltd., Raipur, Chhattisgarh for their captive use.[4]

Rajgamar Block (Area South of Phulakdi Nala) coal mine was allotted to Monnet Ispat and Energy Ltd. and Topworth Steel Pvt. Ltd. for their captive use.[5]

Rajgamar Dipside (Deavnara) underground Coal Mine and Rajgamar Block (Area South of Phulakdi Nala) coal mine both were cancelled by the Supreme Court of India in 2014 and are now listed for reallocation by the Ministry of Coal.[6]
