Background on Mine

The 10.5 million ton-per-annum Rajmahal coal mines were first opened in 1985. The mines are owned by Eastern Coalfields Limited (a subsidiary of state-owned Coal India). The mines supply coal to both the nearby Farakka power station and Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station, both owned by the state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation.[10][11]

Proposed Expansion

In April 2012, Essel Mining and Industries Limited (EMIL) (a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group) won a 12.5-year contract to take over mining operations at the Rajmahal mines, and expand production to 17 MTPA.[12][13] The current status of this proposed takeover/expansion is unclear.

In 2020, Consent to Establish and Consent to Operate for peak production capacity of 23.8 MTY has been obtained. Also, the Environmental Clearance of Rajmahal Expansion Project from 17 MTY to 23.80 MTY was granted on 22.03.2020. [14]
