Background
The power station has a 62 MW unit that was started up in the 1970s.[4] The plan was reportedly set to close in 2019 due to its age and high carbon emissions.[5] However, in 2021, it did not appear to have retired as planned.[6][7]
In March 2024, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana announced plans to add a new 800 MW unit to the existing 62.5 MW power station.[8]
According to reporting from June 2024, a joint action committee of state power employees had urged the government to hand over construction of the proposed expansion to the Telangana Power Generation Corporation (GENCO) instead of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). The committee chairman reportedly stated that SCCL “was basically a coal mining company and it did not have expertise on constructing power plants.”[9]
As of August 2024, the proposed 800 MW unit was slated to replace the older 62.5 MW unit, and SCCL and GENCO planned to build the new unit as a joint venture. The state’s Deputy Chief Minister had reportedly asked local officials to submit proposals identifying possible land for the proposed expansion.[10]
In September 2024, the Telangana state government approved the construction of the proposed 800 MW unit.[11] However, according to reporting from November 2024, the state government had not been following the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) standard procedures for receiving approval to decommission the old 62.5 MW unit before constructing a new 800 MW unit. Unit 1 had reportedly been mothballed since June 2024.[12]
