Background

In 2012, a modernization project of the Rezzato-Mazzano cement plant was started. The revamping of the gray cooking line completed in 2014 and made fully operational during 2015. During 2015 and 2016, the white cooking line was also modernized to improve production and environmental footprint, allowing a significant reduction in water consumption and environmental impacts. In September 2024, Heidelberg Materials initiated a feasibility study for a decarbonization project at the Rezzato-Mazzano plant. The project explores capturing CO₂ emissions from cement production and transporting them via pipeline to the Ravenna CCS storage hub under the Adriatic Sea. The goal of the project is to achieve a capture rate of 95% of the plant's emissions, with the aim of achieving Italy's first facility to produce carbon-captured net-zero cement under the evoZero® brand.
