Rietlanden Terminals

From Global Energy Monitor

Rietlanden Terminals are a pair of coal terminals located at the Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands: the Afrikahaven Terminal and the Amerikahaven/Aziëhaven Terminal. Both terminals are operated by JERA Co., a fuel joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power. They have a combined storage capacity of around 2.6 million tons.[1]

Previously, the Amerikahaven was sometimes referred to as the Rietland terminal (service year: 1989), with the Afrikahaven referred to as the ACT terminal (service year: 2006). A third terminal, the ACP terminal in the Westhaven (service year: 1999), appeared related to the two Rietlanden Terminals.[1][2] However, the ACP is now likely part of the OBA Bulk Terminal.[3]

Afrikahaven Terminal

The Afrikahaven Terminal is specialized in blending multiple coal types and de-ironing at deposition and retrieval. This terminal has a total surface area of 300,000 m2. It has a total quay length of 1,150 meters: 750 m quay right on the Afrikahaven and 400 m in the inner harbour (Zanzibarhaven). It has 1.6 million tons of open storage capacity, and a rail connection with a load capacity of 6 trains.[4]

Amerikahaven/Aziëhaven Terminal

The Amerikahaven/Aziëhaven Terminal is under long term lease with two costumers. The cargoes are mainly scrap metals and coal intended for industrial purposes. The terminal has a total surface area of 165,000 m2 and quay length of 1,000 meters. It is 250 meters in the inner harbour (Aziëhaven).[4]

Ownership

In 2007, EDF Trading – the subsidiary of French energy group EDF (EDF.PA) – bought Amstuw BV, a coal terminal business in the Port of Amsterdam, from the LBH Group.[5] In 2017, JERA Co. – a fuel joint venture of Tokyo Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power – bought EDF Trading and took full control of Amstuw BV’s Terminals.[6][7]
