Rinat Akhmetov is ranked by Forbes as having a personal fortune of $5.2 billion made from his steel and coal interests.[1] One of Akhmetov's companies is the seteel and mining company Metinvest. In April 2009 Metinvest bought United Coal Company, which was ranked at the time as the sixth largest coking coal company in the US.[2]
Another of Akhmetov's companies is Donbass Fuel-Energy Company (DTEK), which has interests in coal-fired power stations in the Ukraine and coal mines. In 2010 DTEK produced over 19 million tonnes of coal representing just over one quarter of all the coal produced in the Ukraine. Platts reported that DTEK states that as of the end of 2008 it had recoverable coal reserves of 837 million million tonnes.[3]
