Rivers Edge Mine

Rivers Edge Mine was an underground coal mining operation in Boone County, West Virginia, operated by Rivers Edge Mining and owned by Patriot Coal.

Patriot Coal temporarily closed the mine after an employee found excess water on March 7, 2011, in a sealed, mined-out area after heavy rains. Patriot reported the problem in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on March 10, saying it got everyone out. Patriot has about 75 miners at Rivers Edge, but did not say how many were evacuated. Patriot said it notified the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, which cited the company for having an imminent danger citation. Patriot plans to contest the citation and hopes to resume production by mid-March.
