Background

The Ruban coal mine (Шахта Имени А.Д. Рубана) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Ruban coal mine is an underground coal mine, owned and operated by SUEK-Kuzbass JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK). The mine is on the Magistralny coalfield.[8]

The mine was initially operated since 1930s, operated by various entities. By 2003, the mine was depleted. SUEK acquired a license for the section 'Krasnoyarsky' of the mine with reserves of over 40 million tonnes and started developing the mine in 2004.[9][10]

In 2012 the mine produced 3.2 million tonnes.[10]

SUEK's 2018 annual report mentioned an expansion project of the mine with a plan to increase capacity to 5 million tonnes per annum.[11] SUEK acquired the license for this section in 2018, with estimated reserves of 200 million tonnes.[12] RUB 7.4 billion was invested in the new section. In December 2021, the new section of the mine 'Blagodatny Gluboky' was commissioned.[12]

In 2020 production reached about 4 million tonnes.[13] 2022 production was 4.4 million tonnes, with all coming from the new section.[14][15][16]

In January 2023, it was reported that a new longwall with reserves of 4.1 million tonnes was commissioned.[16]

In December 2021, a fire occurred in the underground mine, all 128 mine workers were evacuated.[13]
