Background

The existing power station was a 406 MW subcritical power station in Saijo city, co-fired by coal and biomass. Unit 1 was 156 MW and installed in 1965, and unit 2 was 250 MW and installed in 1970.[1]

In March 2022, Shikoku Electric Power submitted notice to the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry that they planned to retire Unit 1 of the plant following the commercial operation of a replacement unit. Unit 1 was taken offline in March 2022.[2]

Replacement unit

Owner Shikoku Electric Power Co. Ltd. proposed replacing unit 1 with a 500 MW ultra-supercritical unit, planned for operation in March 2023.[3] Construction of the unit began in June 2019, according to the Kiko Network.[4] According to Japan Beyond Coal, the old Unit 1 was scheduled to be retired in 2021.[5]

The replacement unit was planned to come online in June 2023.[2][6]

The unit started commercial operation on June 30, as Japan Beyond Coal highlighted.[7][8]
