Background

In August 2024, Pilot LNG LLC and GFI (Gomez Family International), both based in Houston, Texas, announced a joint venture to develop an 0.34 mtpa fossil gas liquefaction and LNG export facility on Mexico's Pacific coast.[2] Known as Salina Cruz LNG, LLC, the joint venture aimed to supply LNG to North and Central American bunker, transportation and fuel-to-power markets.[1] Plans called for development of a land-based liquefaction facility and an FSU with 50,000 to 140,000 m3 of LNG storage capacity.[1][4] The company estimated that the project would be developed over a 36-month period. The permitting process was set to begin immediately, with an anticipated FID date in the second half of 2025 and a commissioning date of mid- to late 2027.[1][3]

The new project was distinct from a previously planned, larger LNG export terminal in the Salina Cruz area sponsored by CFE.
