Background
The power station originally had eight units, only three of which were operating by 2009: unit 3 (coal-fired, 235 MW), unit 7 (coal-fired, 362 MW), and unit 8 (biomass-fired, 35 MW).[7]
Coal-fired unit 3 was retired in 2010.[8]
The remaining coal and biomass units, along with a waste incineration plant, were acquired by Fjernvarme Fyn from Vattenfall in 2015 for US$180 million.[9]
The last coal unit at the power station, unit 7 of 362 MW, was planned for conversion to a peaker gas-fired unit between 2022 and 2029.[10] After 2029, the goal was to convert the unit to run on biogas.[11]
In September 2022, Fjernvarme Fyn announced that coal-fired generation would continue through Spring 2024. The decision was approved due to energy security concerns in light of the war in Ukraine.[12]
