Background
The Sapele power station was commissioned in stages between September 1978 and August 1981.
In September 1978, the first unit was commissioned.[8]
In August 1981, the last unit was commissioned. The total site installed capacity became 1020 MW.[8]
However, when it was established less than 17% of the installed capacity was available due to an unreliable gas supply.
In 1981, the Sapele power station became Nigeria's most modern thermal power station, with one of the highest generation capacities.[8]
Availability and performance studies on the plant’s generators were performed from 2005 to 2011. The results demonstrated that ST01= 89%; ST02 = 89.99%; ST03 = 85.24%; ST04= 87.45%; ST05 = 86.50%; ST06 = 29.71%; while the overall station units’ availability is 88.35%.[8] [9]
In August 2013, Eurafric Power ltd failed to meet the payment of US $201m it bid for the company and requested an extension. At the deadline, the firm had been able to pay only US $129.4 million in two tranches.[9]
In 2016, the plant was acquired by Eurafric Power ltd at US $201 million including a US $51 million credit facility provided to Eurafric by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) with plans to restore the plant.[10] The company announced it has plans to boost the power supply in the country by increasing its capacity to 1500 MW.[11]
As of June 2022, the plant has four steam turbines operating while two steam turbines and four gas turbines are mothballed.[12]
