Background
In 2012, an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the People's Republic of China was signed on cooperation in construction and exploitation of the Sarybulak-Zimunay Gas Pipeline. The pipeline starts at the Sarybulak Gas Field in Kazakhstan and runs to a LNG plant in the town of Zimunay, China, through Maikapchagay border points (Kazakhstan) - Zimunay (China).[2]
According to the agreement, 50% of the gas extracted from the Sarybulak field was to be allocated for Kazakhstan's domestic needs, while the other half was to be sent to China. In June 2013, the gas pipeline was put into operation. Tarbagatay Munay (TBM) was obligated to construct branch gas pipelines to the borders of the settlements located along its route: the city of Zaysan, the villages of Karatal, Ainabulak, Kainar, Zhambyl, Kogedai, Shalkar, Ulken Karatal, Karabulak, and Kensai.[5][2]
