Background
The Sasti mine is a 2.5 million-tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) opencast mine operated by Western Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, in Sasti, Tehsil Rajura, District Chandrapur, Maharashtra, India. The Sasti mine is owned by Western Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. The mine is located near Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and falls in the corridor of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, Pench Tiger Reserve, Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve, Melghat Tiger Reserve, Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. The mining in the wildlife corridor may lead to increased human-wildlife conflict in the area.
River Wardha flows at a distance of 2.5 km from the ML boundary. Gouri nullah, a tributary of River Wardha, flows along the 3 sides of the lease boundary. The project involves modification of the natural drainage by strengthening of a seasonal nallah flowing within the ML. [9]
Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) unearths scam in Sasti mines
The state's thermal power stations have often proved they were supplied inferior quality coal from Western Coalfields Ltd. (WCL). A scam uncovered by the vigilance department of WCL at Sasti opencast mine under WCL Ballarpur Area in Chandrapur district shows why this is so. Sources in WCL's vigilance department told TOI that the loading of coal in trucks deployed by private companies was going on in an illegal manner for the last 18 months. "WCL deploys loading machines at the coal stocks to load the trucks of purchasers. WCL gives contract of loading to private agencies. WCL WCL could not appoint the private contractor at Sasti coal stock for the last 18 months. Still, loading of coal was going on by deploying machines of a private agency working at Sasti railway siding. The department received complaint in this regard. A raid was conducted and two loading machines were seized," said the sources. [10]

In December 2020, Western Coalfields Limited proposed to extend the mine lease area from its existing 919.69 hectares to 1120.48 hecatres, keeping the existing production capacity of 2.5 MTPA the same. While the Terms Of Reference was granted in January 2021, as of August 2022, the EC is still pending.[12]
