Background on Plant
Sepang Power Sdn Bhd, a unit of the Genting Group, was awarded the development of a 710 MW plant in Kuala Langat by the Economic Planning Unit in March 2008. At that time the company was owned by Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd.[1]
In late 2008 Tenaga Nasional Bhd purchased a 70 percent share of Sepang Power for RM115 million.[1]
In 2009, it was reported that Tenaga was considering selling its share in Sepang Power as part of an effort to raise cash by disposing of stakes in independent power producers like Sepang Power. According to the report, Genting was considering purchasing Sepang but was "still pondering over Tenaga's condition that the new plant use coal instead of gas as fuel."[1]
Subsequent to this report, there is no further indication on the Genting Group or the Tenaga websites that this project is moving forward; it is presumed to have been abandoned.
