Background

The coal deposit was allocated in January 2008 to ArcelorMittal (55%) and GVK(45%). The two companies, which formed the joint venture company Seregarha Mines Limited to develop the project, have been warned that they risk losing the coal allocation due to lack of progress in meeting project development milestones.[2]

On its website GVK states that the Sereghara mine block has "mine-able reserves" of "100 million tonnes."[3] However, in a February 2011 investor presentation GVK stated that its share of coal reserves in the mine amounted to 66.7 million tonnes.[4]

GVK states that 1 million tonnes per annum of coal from the mine is to be supplied to the Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Plant.[4]

In its 2010-2011 annual report GVK states that "the prospecting License and Exploration Contract have been executed and the work has commissioned."[5]

However, as per the latest information available in the Public domain and as listed on the Ministry of Coal website, the mine is listed for further allocation through the auction route, and temporarily shelved.[6]
