Background
Originally coal-fired, the Severodonetsk CHP power station began operating in 1952. It was designed to supply heat and power to the city of Severodonetsk, as well as the Severodonetsk Nitrogen Factory. Its original design capacity was 260 MW.[15] All of the original coal-fired units were converted to run on natural gas with fuel oil as the reserve fuel from 1976-1980.[16]
The power station was being considered for privatization.[17] However, in August 2021, Ukrainian state-owned enterprise Naftogaz took full control of the Severodonetsk CHP power station.[18][19]
War in Ukraine
In March 2022, the power station has halted operation due to the military hostilities in the area. The power station itself did not appear to be damaged.[20] There are reports that damage to water, heat, and electricity distribution networks is extensive in the region and in Severodonetsk and is at the moment impossible to repair due to the ongoing hostilities.[21] In June 2022 the power station was virtually destroyed by Russian shelling.[22] In October 2023, restoration of the damaged boiler houses in Severodonetsk was mentioned on the website of the Government of Russia, but not the Severodonetsk CHP.[23] As of December 2023, the power plant is located on the territory occupied by Russia and has not been restored.[24]
In October 2024, it was reported that repairs to the plant's boilers were nearly finished, and preparations for the upcoming heating season were underway. The power station anticipated receiving funding for repairs to its steam turbines and auxiliary equipment. According to the new management of the plant, the generating equipment includes three sturbines each capable of producing 50 MW. Once the repairs are completed, only two of the three turbines will be able to operate simultaneously, with the plant's maximum generating capacity reaching 100 MW.[25]
