Background

The coal port is in Sakhalin, Russia.

It is located only 28 km from the main mining asset of its parent company East Mining Company LLC - Solntsevsky coal mine. Coal is sent through the port to countries of the Asia-Pacific region, including China, South Korea, India, Thailand, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and others.[2]

In 2023, the port handled a record 13.1 million tonnes of coal, up from 11 Mt in 2022.[2][1]

Conveyor Belt from the Mine to the Port

In 2020, the company started the construction of a 23km conveyor belt connecting the Solntsevsky Coal Mine and Shakhtersk port.[3] As of August 2022, over 70% of structure installation was completed.[4] The project consists of the conveyor belt, reconstruction of the port, an automated storage facility at the mine site, two substations and another 'transit' storage facility. The conveyor belt should eliminate transportation of coal by large trucks, thus reducing emissions.[4]

In January 2023, it was announced that completion of the conveyor belt project is scheduled for the second half of 2023.[5] The company planned to produce a total of 13.5Mt in 2023 and in a few years increase port shipments from the coal mine to the port to 20Mt.[6][7]

As of March 2024, the company was preparing for the launch of the conveyor, expecting to complete it in 2024[8]
