Background
Shidongkou-1 was originally a 4 x 325 MW plant commissioned from 1988 to 1990. Shidongkou-2 was a 2 x 600 MW and 2 x 660 MW plant commissioned from 1992 to 2009. They were majority-owned by China Huaneng.[2]
CCS
Part of one Shidongkou-2 600 MW reactor was built with carbon capture and storage capabilities to capture 0.1 Million tonnes a year (approximately 4% of a single unit's output).[3]
Replacement
Shidongkou-1 Units 1-4 were planned to be replaced with two new 650 MW units. The units were permitted for construction in December 2019 and planned to be commissioned in 2022. The new units were sponsored by China Huaneng and Shenergy Group.[4]
Construction began in December 2020.[5]
The first unit began operating in late December 2022.[6][7]
In May 2023, it was reported that in a first for the country, Unit 6 of Huaneng Shidongkou No.1 Plant was operating, completing an "equal-capacity replacement demonstration project."[8]
It was also reported that two 325 MW units were shutdown once the new capacity came online, based on a Shanghai Development and Reform Commission announcement.[9]
