Background
Sherlovskaya-Naklonnaya coal mine (шахта Шерловская-Наклонная) is an underground coal mine 23 km east of the town of Zverevo, Krasnosulinsky District, Rostov Oblast, Russia. Donugol JSC operates the mine and it is currently the only producing mine of the company. The mine was put into commercial operation in 2007.[9]
The mine produces high-quality anthracite. Novocherkasskaya GRES was initially the main consumer of coal, but in 2010, a complex for receiving and sieving ARSH was put into operation, which allowed the production of unenforced coal of higher grades and expansion of the customer base. With the increase of production and the expansion of the geography of deliveries, it was necessary to modernize and increase the loading capacity of railway transport. In 2020, the second loading platform for loading high-grade coals into railway wagons was put into operation.[9]
The intensive development of mining operations, the expansion of the mining network and the increase in the depth of mining reserves required a deep modernization of Sherlovskaya-Naklonnaya mine. In the period from 2019 to 2021, a new inclined trunk with a length of 2.8km and a new AVR-22 main ventilation fan unit were built. This made it possible to supply more fresh air to the mine, reduce the temperature in the mine workings and switch to a more stable suction method of ventilation.[9]
In 2021 the mine produced over 1 million of tons, with over half exported to the EU, Ukraine, Canada, India, South Africa.[10] The rest was delivered to the domestic market.
By 2026 Donugol planned to consolidate the operations of Sherlovskaya-Naklonnaya and the neighbouring Obukhovskaya-1 coal mine which has been mothballed for many years.
The State authorities conducted a review of the mine's safety in 2021. Two dead-end areas of the mine are of particular concern as they are located under flooded areas and have only one exist.[11] However there were no major safety violations detected, according the news report.[11]
