Background
Shimen power station is a four-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,200 MW. The plant was completed between 1996 and 2006. The plant is owned by Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group (54%), China Datang (42%), Hunan Detai Coal Industry Company (4%).[2][3][4]
Expansion
In July 2019, it was reported that a 4 x 660 MW expansion at the power station was planned and included in the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Electric Power Development" of Hunan Province (2021-2025). It was planned for operation in 2023.[5]
In October 2022, various news referenced a 2 x 660 MW expansion and upgrading project was started.[6][7][8]
By March 2023, the "third phase" (no capacity listed) had reportedly completed land clearing, green pressing, and enclosure work.[9]
By June 2023, preliminary design expert review meeting was held for 2 x 660 MW.[10]
The designated railway line for 2 x 660 MW units was permitted in March 2022.[11]
With no known updates in at least two years, two of the four units of the project were presumed shelved in 2023.
