Shipyard River Terminal is a multi-purpose facility located on the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina, United States.

The facility handles coal, petroleum coke, cement, oils, and various other liquids and materials.

Coal terminal

The Shipyard River Terminal at the Port of Charleston has been a coal import terminal; in 2012 the terminal operator was considering the addition of coal export capability at its existing bulk handling facility.

Shipyard River Terminal previously exported coal but the equipment was removed shortly after Kinder Morgan bought the terminal in 1998 from Zeigler Coal Holding Co. for US$35 million. Kinder would like to spend US$200 million to boost capacity at the terminal to 8 million short tons a year from 2.5 million, but was waiting for a dedicated buyer.

As of September 2021 the capacity at the terminal is still reported to be 2.5 million short tons per year (approximately 2.27 million metric tonnes). With no further news since 2013, plans for expansion of the Shipyard River Coal Terminal appear to be cancelled.
