Background

The Shondoni mine is an operating coal mine near Embalenhle, in Mpumalanga, South Africa. It replaced the Middelbult mine, which had depleted its coal reserves. The Shondoni mine was commissioned by Sasol Mining, its owner, in 2013 to replace the Middelbult mine, which was depleting its coal reserves. The mine was initially planned to begin operating and replace Middelbult in 2015.[6]

However, it wasn't until 2018 that Shondoni began operating. Sasol announced that the mine should produce between 8-9 million tonnes of coal per year, over 30 years, while employing 1200 people.[7]

However, a recent SEC filing showed that the Shondoni mine produced just 7.1 million tonnes of coal in 2019.[8]
