Background
Sigma Mooikraal Coal Mine is an underground mine owned and operated by Sasol in Sasolburg, Free State, South Africa.[6] Sasol's original opencast and underground Sigma Colliery began production in 1954.
However, in 2005, the Sigma Mooikraal mine was brought online to provide 20 million tonnes per year (Mtpa) of coal to Sasol's utility plants in Sasolburg. It was meant to replace the depleted Mohlolo underground operation as well as the Wonderwater opencast operation at the Sigma mine site, which were experiencing final closure and rehabilitation. This new, revamped colliery consists of Sasol Sigma, Mooikraal Colliery, and a three shaft complex.[7][8]
As of October 2018, the original Sigma mine site area is considered to be defunct, and only the Mooikraal and 3-shaft complexes remain operational.[9]
