Background
It was reported in January 2014 that the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) had started pursuing in-principle approval for allocation of land for the 4,000MW coal-based Sirkali Thermal Power Project in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. The coal reserve for the project has been allotted in Jilga-Barpalli coal block of Chhattisgarh.[1] Neyveli Lignite has requested the Ministry of Coal for allocation of suitable alternate block to meet the fuel requirement of the full 4,000 MW Sirkali Thermal Power Project, including an Expression of Interest for acquiring coal assets abroad.[2]
In April 2017 NLC India (formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation) said it had decided not to go ahead with the proposed plant, saying the project is unviable due to the distance required to transport the coal.[3]
