Background

The Springboklaagte coal project is a proposed coal mine near Delmas, in Mpumalanga, South Africa.[2] In 2008, Lexshell 99 entered into an agreement to acquire the shares of Springboklaagte Mining Pty Ltd; Lexshell 99 is jointly controlled by Izimbiwa Coal and Umcebo Holdings Mining (Pty) Ltd. Izimbiwa is owned by Phembani (50.01%) and Glencore (49.99%).[3]

By 2011, exploration drilling at the Springboklaagte deposit and feasibility studies relating to the project were progressing.[2]

A 2014 Minerals Yearbook from the USGS stated that the Springboklaagte project could produce 2.4 Mt/yr of run-of-mine coal starting in 2019.[4] The mining rights for Springboklaagte were granted in May 2016 for 20 years (expiring on 30 May 2036).[5]

However, a 2019 Resources and Reserves report from Glencore stated that the mine is still awaiting environmental licensing and permitting.[5]

In 2021, the project continued to be the subject of consulting studies and reports.
